Toxic chemicals, biological pathogens, radiological substances, unshielded nuclear material and explosives pose a significant threat to human life and safety, whether used as weapons of mass destruction by foreign or domestic partners or released during natural disasters or industrial accidents. In fiscal year 2013-14, the region spent $6.1 million on CBRNE enhancement programs.
Building the capability to respond to chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear, and explosive (CBRNE) incidents is a priority for both our emergency service personnel and the populace of the Bay Area. Over the years, the Bay Area UASI has been instrumental in ensuring that our region’s responders have the equipment necessary to save lives and property during an emergency incident.
Specialized teams such as SWAT are provided with gas masks, Kevlar helmets, and ballistic shields. Fire fighters and hazardous materials teams received personal protective equipment including swift water dry suits for water rescue. UASI-funded equipment has made it possible for the safe resolution of dozens of critical incidents in specific jurisdictions and for the region as a whole.
